FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Cyrace — compatibility, privacy, and common issues.
General
What is Cyrace?
Cyrace is an iOS app that turns your smart trainer into a race course simulator. Load any GPX route and your trainer adjusts resistance to match the real-world gradients — every climb, every descent, felt as actual resistance changes.
Do I need a Zwift subscription?
No. Cyrace is completely independent from Zwift. It communicates directly with your trainer via Bluetooth and doesn’t require any subscription or online service.
Will using Cyrace get me banned from Zwift?
No. Cyrace connects to your trainer over Bluetooth just like any other training app. It has no connection to Zwift’s platform.
Does the app work offline?
Yes, completely. Cyrace doesn’t connect to the internet at all. Everything runs locally on your iPhone.
Does Cyrace collect any data?
No. Zero data collection, no analytics, no accounts, no cloud sync. Your training data stays on your device.
Compatibility
Which trainers work with Cyrace?
Any smart trainer that supports the Bluetooth FTMS (Fitness Machine Service) standard. This includes:
- Wahoo KICKR (all versions), KICKR Core, KICKR Snap
- Tacx NEO, Tacx Flux, Tacx Flow
- Elite Direto, Elite Suito, Elite Zumo
- Zwift Hub, Zwift Hub One
- Saris H3
- And many more FTMS-compatible trainers
Does Cyrace work with Zwift Play controllers?
Not currently. Only the Zwift Ride controller is supported. Zwift Play controller support may be added in a future update.
What about ANT+ trainers?
Cyrace uses Bluetooth only. Most modern smart trainers support both ANT+ and Bluetooth — make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your trainer.
Which iPhones are supported?
Any iPhone running iOS 17 or later. There is no iPad or Android version at this time.
Using the App
Can I use Cyrace without a Zwift Ride controller?
Yes. All features work without the controller. In ERG mode, on-screen buttons appear for power adjustments. In Simulation mode, set your preferred starting gear in Settings before riding.
Where do I get GPX files?
You can export GPX files from most cycling platforms:
- Strava — open a route or ride, export as GPX
- RideWithGPS — download route as GPX
- Komoot — export tour as GPX
- Garmin Connect — export course as GPX
- Event websites — many races publish the course as a GPX file
Save the GPX file to your iPhone’s Files app (or iCloud Drive) and load it from within Cyrace.
Can I export my ride data?
Ride data export (to Strava, intervals.icu, etc.) is planned but not yet available in the current beta. For now, ride data is shown in the post-ride summary but not saved after dismissing.
How do I switch between ERG and Simulation mode?
On the Ride tab, when your session is stopped and there’s no recorded data, you’ll see an ERG / SIM toggle at the bottom. Tap to switch. You cannot switch modes while a session is recording — stop and discard first.
Troubleshooting
My trainer won’t connect
- Close any other apps connected to your trainer (Zwift, TrainerRoad, Wahoo, etc.) — only one app can control a BLE trainer at a time
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone
- Try the “Scan for Devices” button on the Connect tab
- Power-cycle your trainer if it still won’t appear
The Zwift Ride controller disconnected
Power-cycle the controller: turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Then tap “Scan for Devices” in the Connect tab.
Resistance feels wrong in Simulation mode
- Check that Physics-Based Resistance is ON in Settings (recommended)
- Verify your rider and bike weight are set correctly
- Try adjusting the GPX smoothing settings — see Simulation Mode > Tuning Tips
- Make sure your Max Gradient setting matches your trainer’s capability (Wahoo KICKR: 20%, Tacx NEO: 25%)
The app shows “Control Denied” for my trainer
This usually means another app still has control. Force-close other training apps and try disconnecting/reconnecting your trainer in Cyrace.
